Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we take a look at five different boosty-preampy-overdrivey-type pedals that differ significantly from your ‘normal’, op-amp-based overdrive. By ‘normal’ we mean the common and much-loved OD pedals out there such as the Boss SD-1, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Boss Blues Driver, Fulltone OCD and so on… all of which work in a broadly similar fashion with a combination of an operational amplifier (usually an IC chip such as the JRC4558D in the case of the classic Tube Screamers) and some form of clipping diodes.
These five do things differently… and sound very different to boot, offering up a whole range of different tones, textures and responses that can complement – or indeed totally replace – that ‘normal’ OD on your board. We’re not saying ‘better’, we’re not saying ‘worse’, we just saying ‘different’ and well worth checking out for anyone who hasn’t already done so.
Let’s get to it…
